Aligning with the GDST Ethos
As part of the Girls Day School Trust, Streatham & Clapham High School align to the ethos of promoting and providing an academic environment to both engage and inspire girls to develop and fulfill their individual character and potential beyond that of the typical school curriculum.
The brief developed for the modernisation and evolution of the IT Suite was produced through engagement with both the pupils and staff, while ensuring that the core values outlined by the GDST underpinned all elements implemented within the design.
Transforming Learning Spaces with Design by Two
At Design by Two, we pride ourselves on transforming spaces to enhance functionality, creativity, and overall user experience. For Streatham & Clapham High School, we had the opportunity to modernise their existing IT Suite, creating a dynamic environment that inspires learning and innovation.
Innovative Features for Modern Education
The redesigned IT Suite introduces innovative features tailored to modern learning. A state-of-the-art podcast studio has been incorporated, enabling students to develop communication and digital production skills, while a dedicated robotics table supports STEM-focused activities and fosters hands-on problem-solving.
A Calming Environment for Creativity and Focus
Careful attention was given to the overall atmosphere of the space. The design prioritises a calming environment that promotes focus and creativity, using a mix of natural, sustainable, and recycled materials. Improved ergonomics were also a key consideration, ensuring the space is not only functional but also comfortable for both students and staff.
Key Objectives
Our brief was to reimagine the IT Suite as a multifunctional space that aligns with contemporary teaching practices while fostering creativity for both staff and students. The key objectives included modernising the existing IT Suite to meet current and future educational needs, improving the layout to enhance teaching practices and collaborative learning, and creating a creative hub accessible to both staff and pupils. Additionally, the design aimed to establish a calm environment with desks accommodating 25 pupils and to provide a space that encourages and supports STEM-focused activities and opportunities for students.
Bespoke Design for Enhanced Functionality
Bespoke elements have been thoughtfully crafted to enhance the usability and aesthetic of the space. Custom-designed computer desks were created to suit the unique requirements of the classroom, while the podcast studio features acoustic optimisation, enabling a range of creative projects in a professional-quality setting.
Sustainability at the Heart of Design
Sustainability was a core focus throughout the project. The space features a warm, calming colour palette complemented by eco-friendly materials. Recycled plastics were used to create durable yet stylish carpet tiles and stone-style countertops. Fluted oak detailing and cladding add texture and sophistication to the joinery and podcast studio, while mummified planting in the studio introduces biophilic design elements that enhance the overall sense of well-being.

The completed IT Suite is a transformative space that delivers on multiple levels. It provides a calm and respectful teaching area conducive to focused study, alongside an energetic and vibrant podcast studio that sparks creativity and innovation. The thoughtful layout and bespoke furniture offer improved ergonomics, ensuring the space supports the diverse needs of its users.
